In the early Renaissance, in many ways a far more superstitious time than the Middle Ages, they again became popular, especially the Corpus Hermiticum and related works. Regardless of who is the true author, the drama is a great read for students who want to improve their knowledge of Greek texts. Another special plants were the marsh plant, known as the samolus, used as charm against diseases of cattle. One of his most popular exploits was to belabor the Devil about the stage with a wooden dagger, a habit which took a great hold on the popular imagination, as numerous references in later literature testify.
