There is, however, the problem of people fooling themselves into thinking they are obeying the divine command but in reality are engaging in casuistry. We can tell what's right; we can tell what's wrong by the response of our conscience. Although the discussion continues and at points has gone beyond what McNamara presents here, this book is still a valuable contribution to the entire debate. "The Primacy of Justice in Moral Theology", Horizons 10 (1983) 72-85. * A somewhat provocative piece that is simultaneously very "traditional" in the best sense of the term.

We believe that on the whole it is for our 'good' and the good of others that we should live according to the prescriptions and proscriptions of morality and of law. And I threw him out of the height with his angels."5 There is always a possibility, not to be overlooked, that the idea of a jealous God who seeks to prevent men from gaining the knowledge of good and evil, expresses a darkly unconscious human fear of the very adventure of human existence.

The temptation to home in on what is merely transitional in, or incidental to, the text's internal logic is hard to resist; for in every biblical interpreter there is something of the little boy who, on being asked by his RE teacher, after a reading of the Parable of the Prodigal Son, 'Now who was very sad to see the younger son return?', replied 'Please, Miss: the 14 The Bible and Christian ethics fatted calf!'
