There were several reasons for the huge numbers of casualties in the Civil War. American newspapers accounted for one-third of all newspapers printed in the world. Examples of civil rights are freedom of speech, press, and assembly; the right to vote; freedom from involuntary servitude; and the right to equality in public places. Both intra-textually and extra-textually, therefore, the slave narrative from the early nineteenth century onward was a vehicle for dialogue over slavery and racial issues between whites and blacks in the North and the South.

By late September 1862, Buell, Bragg and Smith were all in northern Kentucky. One wonders if the public would have been much less concerned if they had been told the truth instead of lurid imaginary details by the papers. Box 2 of this collection contains letters written by Eliza Kirk of Sterling, Illinois. We have a common Bible; we kneel at the game altar, break bread together, and there can be no difficulty between us on this score.

Heath (1821-1909) in Herkimer County, New York, stating that his ship has returned briefly to Hampton Roads, and that he and others had bought fresh fruits and vegetables from an African American who then protected their purchase from others. Antietam also gave Lincoln the opening he needed to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, which declared that as of January 1, 1863, all slaves in states rebelling against the Union were free.

Indeed, it must be noted that the option adopted by AFIS, in which Somalis were given the option of laity or Islamic law is probably the most suitable to a country in which Islam is not as deep-rooted as it is in the Middle East and other Muslim countries. Here Bensel is of the opinion that Seward’s proposal “revealed the new secretary of state’s profound awareness of the narrow basis of northern nationalism during the early months of the Lincoln administration.” (Bensel 12n) Another view is that Seward was looking for a means of saving face while permitting the south to secede.
